What is EPDM Rubber?

EPDM is known for its excellent resistance to heat, ozone, sunlight, and aging. Its distinctive ability to stabilize color and resist harsh weather conditions makes it an ideal choice for outdoor applications. EPDM rubber is a high-density synthetic rubber used for outdoor applications and other spaces in need of tough, versatile parts.

EPDM features excellent resistance to water, steam, alkalis, acids, and oxidants. It is also sulfur and peroxide curable. It is extremely durable and flexible and therefore has a wide range of applications, including in vehicles (where it is used for window and door seals, as well as cooling system hoses), cold-rooms, non-slip coatings for decks and playgrounds, and many others besides.

What does EPDM stand for?

EPDM stands for ethylene propylene diene monomer, although it is a bit full of mouthfuls, it is usually abbreviated as EPDM or EPDM rubber.

EPDM gets its name from the chemicals (monomers) formed by mixing together in various proportions. They are ethylene, propylene, and dienes. The ethylene content is usually between 45% and 75%.

Although the diene monomer only accounts for a small part of the EPDM composition, it provides a cross-linking function and can provide incredible resilience, flexibility, and durability. The excellent material properties of EPDM come from this molecular sieve structure, making it unparalleled in terms of elasticity and aging resistance.

EPDM Rubber Performance

Aging resistance

EPDM has excellent weather resistance, ozone resistance, heat resistance, acid, and alkali resistance.
Water vapor resistance and color stability are also excellent.

Weather resistance

Can be used in the sun, wet, and cold natural environment for a long time.

Heat resistance

Under normal circumstances, it can be used for a long time in an environment of 120 °C.
The maximum operating temperature is 150 °C.

Corrosion resistance

EPDM rubber has a high resistance to various polar chemicals.
There is almost no change in performance after prolonged contact.

Electrical insulation

Has very good electrical insulation properties and corona resistance.

Impact elasticity and low-temperature performance

EPDM rubber has high elasticity and the lowest temperature can reach -50 °C or lower.
